Notice what’s missing on the D700? That’s right — there’s no “BKT” button.
The D70 allowed you to bracket in increments of several stops (eg -3.0, 0, 3.0). This was great for HDR images, where you want to capture detail in the shadows and highlights. Nikon broke this with the D200, where you can only bracket in 1-stop increments – so you have to take 7 shots to get the ones you need, wasting 4 of them (ie -3.0, -2.0, -1.0, 0, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0).
With the D700 the bracketing button is gone completely. This means you either need to assign the FUNC button (which everyone already uses for something else), or dig through the menus. In our opinion, this is a
bad move on Nikon’s part.

Thanks for the bracketing comments. I use bracketing a lot, even for situations where I am not going to do HDR.
It helps when there is a quick oppurtunity and you do not have time to tinker with setting exposure settings. So just hitting the bracket button is a real convenience. I use the D80 right now and I am thinking about moving up to a full frame camera, and with the cost involved, it would be nice to have the BKT button available.

Awesome site! Thanks! I just purchased my d700 and am slowly familiarizing myself with all the functions. Bracketing is something I’ve never done before, and apparently from what I’ve read Nikon isn’t especially bracketing-friendly, so I’ll be learning the hard way

Can’t you just use the “exposure compensation button” for creating HDR images?
I’m going to buy de D700 in a while. And I’m definitely going to experiment with HDR on it.
My complements on your site.

d700 I have the func button set as bracketing, easy as pie. hold the button and spin the rear control wheel to set the stops.

You have a very friendly website. I have had the D200 for about 4 years now and I use the Bracketing function quite often as I shoot mostly in low-light situations. It is sad to hear that this function has gone the way of the Dodo but I’m sure I’ll just build a new working style with my new D700 (which will arrive in 5 days).
Cheers

What a silly move! And for what? For a quality button. Everyone I know shoots the D700 in RAW, maybe some will even shoot in in JPEG, but even then, why on earth would you need a button for that, bracketing is a much more changed setting than the quality (which is a personal choice most people will set once and never change.) It almost sounds like replacing the ISO button with a direct print button.

The D700 works the same as the D300 d700 press func button and set the braketing by spinning the rear control wheel to set the stops..

Forgot my manual at home and couldn’t remember how to turn off bracketing. Found the answer on your web site. Thank you. I agree there should be a simpler way that is intuitive.

Just purchased my d700 and I am slowly learning all the whistles and bells. What I can’t figure and maybe this is normal …On the top Lcd, after turning the camera off, there is a [2.1] k showing on the screen. What is this?

Okay, I figured that one out. It’s supposed to do that as it shows the number of exposures remaining. I was afraid it would be draining the battery.
